GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

What a great service and wonderful time of sharing and fellowship we had this past Sunday night. Thanks to all who came, to those who shared testimonies and songs, and to those who prepared the delicious food. Thank you,  Leonard Harvell, for organizing and leading this special service. It was a great night as we celebrated Jesus.

As I think of Christmas memories, and as I think of the one thing I miss the most, it is the big family dinners we had at my Dad and Mom’s. Dad was the cook, and Mom was his busy little helper. Dad raised his own turkeys. Because the family was large, he always tried to have one that weighed more than 30 pounds.

When the meal was ready, Dad began to fill take out plates. Notice, these were not our family’s leftovers, but were straight out of the pots before any food was placed on the table. Before the family sat down to eat, these take out plates were carried to widows, shut ins, and hurting people my Dad knew. I did not know that Albemarle had homeless, street people at that time, but Dad often found some of them to feed as well. At that point in his life, my Dad would not have claimed to be a Christian, but I think he was acting like one.

After the take outs were delivered, the family sat down to eat. Dad, Mom, Mom’s mother, Mom’s 3 unmarried sisters, 4 boys and their wives, and 8 grandchildren. Once the grandchildren reached a certain age they brought their dates. We could squeeze 12-14 people around the dining room table. Everyone else sat at folding tables in the living room.

Food was abundant and delicious. The house rang with teasing, laughter, fellowship and joy. I have fond memories and I miss that time of sweet family togetherness.

Many of that family group are now in Heaven, waiting for the remainder of the family to arrive. I am eternally thankful that my Dad did profess faith in Jesus as his Lord and Savior before he died. We cannot go back and repeat what we enjoyed so long ago. However, we can look forward with great anticipation to an even greater family dinner together.

Consider Revelation 19:9 “Blessed are they which are called unto the marriage supper of the Lamb”. Oh, friends, what a glorious time that will be when all true believers in Jesus gather around the table in Heaven to celebrate our Lord. The joy, the praise, the happiness, the rejoicing will be far beyond any meal we have experienced on earth.. Aren’t you glad you will be there? If you can’t say for sure that you will be there at that table in Heaven, please accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior this very minute!!

I have great memories and I also have great expectations. The old was wonderful, the new will be fantastic!!!.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

The situation may have changed by the time you read this Newsletter, but you will still understand my illustration. There are several roads I can take as I drive from my house to Barbee’s Grove. Last week, as I drove on one particular road, I went past a huge field of cotton that had not been harvested. On another road there was a big field of soybeans that had not been combined.

A few weeks ago, both fields looked great, ready to be harvested. Now, with every new rainstorm, they look worse, and as if they are losing value. What went wrong? Did the farmers have more planted than they could harvest? Were there equipment breakdowns? Was it illness? Surely, it wasn’t laziness or carelessness. As a person who did some farming in my younger years, seeing good crops going to ruin, makes me sad.

In the Christmas story [Luke 2: 10,11 ] the angels announce the birth of Jesus, the Savior, who is “good news to all people”. Notice, it is good news to “all” people. But it is not good news if “all” people have never heard it. Remember, Jesus remarked about “fields that are already white unto harvest” [John 4: 35]Jesus is saying, now is the time for harvest. Paul comments in Romans 10: 14, 15, “How shall they hear without a preacher, and how shall they preach unless they be sent?” Good questions.

That brings it down to you and me. What are we personally doing to harvest souls for the Kingdom of God? First, what about our giving? Pamela and I always try to give a nice gift to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering for International Missions. Some years we are able to give more than in other years, but we always try to do our best. In addition, we have discovered several ministries that are reaching places we cannot go, and people who have been waiting for generations to hear that “good news for all people”. As the Lord blesses us, we support those ministries also.

Secondly, we each have our personal mission field. Unsaved family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, are all a part of our personal mission fields. Your field is different from my field, but we each do have a field. Are we actively seeking to harvest our field? Or, is our field like that cotton field and that soybean field? Is our crop slowly being lost because we are not laboring in the harvest?

We each need to answer those questions for ourselves. As the old song says, “Work for the night is coming when man’s work is over”. There will come a moment: our death, their death, the Rapture of the Church, when the time of harvest will be over. Will our barns be full, or empty?

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

As you know, this past Sunday, we adopted the 2023 Budget for Barbee’s Grove Baptist Church. It is an ambitious budget, a faith budget. Most of the budget increase comes from the inclusion of a salary for a part-time Youth Pastor. Our committee is already working, looking for the person God wants at our church.

Some of the money we spend in our personal budgets and in our church budget are expenditures. We pay for electricity, etc. Other money goes for investments. We expect a long-term return on our money. We need to think of the salary for this Youth Pastor as an investment. It is an investment in our children and our youth. It is an investment for the future of Barbee’s Grove Church. It should bring lasting dividends.

We can meet this budget if we do as the Bible instructs and “Bring our tithes into the storehouse”. As we tithe and give regularly, the Lord will provide all that is needed.

I understand the financial struggle that all of us are experiencing. I bought some groceries this week. When the check out clerk told me the total I owed, my first thought was, “Two years ago I could have bought these same groceries for $ 50 less”. We are all in the same boat.God is faithful. He promises that as we give it “shall be given to us, good measure, pressed down, and running over”. You can look at me and see that the only meals I missed in the past 70 years were meals I chose to miss. When we were first married Pamela and I ate a lot of fried fatback or fried bologna sandwiches. We never went hungry. And, there were some steaks along the way. God always provided.

Let’s take our new church budget seriously. Sure, it is a challenge. Can we do it? Yes, we can! Remember, God blesses the faithful.

Let me close by saying that I am so proud of the way you give when it comes to special offerings. I do not know of a Baptist Church anywhere that does better in giving for Lottie Moon, Children’s Homes, etc. When we consider our usual attendance you do an awesome job in giving to meet the needs of others. THANK YOU!

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Christmas is upon us. As you look back over the years of your life, do you have special Christmas memories that bless you? I hope so. May I share one of mine with you?

I must have been 14 or 15. Transistor radios that operated on batteries were coming on the market. That Christmas I received one of those radios. It was used, but I did not care. It was about the size of an encyclopedia volume, so I held it on my shoulder as I walked about the neighborhood. I thought I was the “coolest dude around.” Since I mostly listened to country music, others probably considered me to be a “red neck.”

Only later did I learn how I came to receive that radio. I was told that my Dad swapped a coon dog for it! Now, my Dad loved his coon dogs. For him to trade away a dog was a real sacrifice on his part. It was evidence of Dad’s love for me and of his desire to please me.

My Dad’s sacrifice does not begin to compare with the sacrifice that was made in Heaven so long ago. There, a Loving Heavenly Father looked at people lost in sin. People who were on their journey to Hell. It was a people with no hope and no way out of their destiny. That Loving Heavenly Father made a trade. He traded the death of His Son, Jesus, on Calvary’s cross for our salvation!!!! Thank You Father! Thank You Jesus! What an amazing gift of love is offered to us.

That transistor radio has long since been broken, discarded, and thrown into some landfill. It was a precious treasure, but it was not a permanent treasure. Contrast that with Jesus. He is a Precious Treasure who is for today, tomorrow, and for all eternity. Jesus will always be with you. Thank God for Jesus. Receive Him. Live for Him. Worship Him forever.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

By the time most of you read this Newsletter, Black Friday, the big shopping day, will have come and gone. That leads me to ask you the question, “What kind of shopper are you”?

Some folks are careful shoppers. They study the ads. They look for companies that sell high class products. Perhaps they consult Consumer Reports, or some other comparison source. These shoppers want the very best product available for what they can afford to pay. It is a desire to use their money wisely.

Other shoppers don’t care much about quality. Even if they have the money to buy high quality, they choose whatever is most convenient. “If it looks good, buy it”, is their motto. So often, this type of shopper gets home and is disappointed in his purchase. His money has been wasted.

Jesus told this parable in Matthew 13: 45, 46. “Again the Kingdom of Heaven is like a merchant man on the search for lovely pearls. But when he had found one pearl of great price, he went away and sold everything that he had and bought it”. Here was a man who was earnestly seeking a valuable possession. When he found it, he let nothing stand in his way. He bought that pearl for his very own.

Friends, Jesus is that Pearl of Great Price. Knowing Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, and then moving on to a growing, intimate relationship with Him as your Lord, is the greatest treasure this world has to offer. Blessed are those who seek Jesus with all their hearts. Like those early disciples, they allow nothing to come between them and Jesus. Every choice revolves around, “How does this affect my relationship with the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords”? In this life, and throughout eternity, these believers will rejoice that they chose wisely.

Sadly, there are those who choose otherwise. Some will choose and devote their lives to other treasures which will bring them disappointment. Some will halfheartedly choose Jesus. They will not pursue Him ardently. Unfortunately, they will never know the fullness and the true joy of their relationship with Him.

In spiritual matters, when you go shopping, “What kind of shopper are you?  Both earthly and eternal life depends upon wise choices.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

This has been a tumultuous week. Only one other time in 60 years of ministry can I remember my church being hit with so much sorrow in the same week.Today, we  offer our love, sympathy, and prayers to:
…Mr. Lionel Hahn and family upon the death of his father, Mr. Heath Hahn
…Mrs. Carol Kelly and family upon the death of her husband, Mr. Jerry Kelly
…Mr. Kenny Linker and family upon the death of his mother, Mrs. Elsa Linker
…Mrs. Dorothy McLaurin and family upon the death of her husband, Mr. Bobby McLaurin

At times like these, we as believers in Jesus, have a strength and a hope that unbelievers do not have. We rest and find comfort in God’s promises:

…”The eternal God is our refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms…” [ Deuteronomy 33:27 ]
…”Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil: for Thou art with me; Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me” [Psalm 23: 4
…”Let not your heart be troubled. Ye believe in God, believe also in Me…I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go to prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.” [John 14 : 1-3 ]
…Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you….Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” [ John 14 :27 ]

Most of the time when we celebrate the Lord’s Supper at Barbee’s Grove we conclude the service by singing ” Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love…”. This week, verse 3 of that old hymn is especially appropriate :”We share our mutual woes, Our mutual burdens bear, And often for each other flows, A sympathizing tear.” AMEN

From time-to-time, each one of us has to walk through a dark valley. We do not make that journey alone. As believers we have the loving presence of our Lord Jesus and the encouraging love of our brothers and sisters in Christ. Even in sorrow, let us continue to be thankful for Jesus and all He gives to us.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

What happened to the GOAT? No! I am not talking about a little hairy animal that you see in a pasture. Sports fans know that GOAT has become an acronym for GREATEST OF ALL TIME. Depending upon the sport, avid fans like to debate who was the greatest of all time as a quarterback, running back, basketball player, golfer, NASCAR driver, coach, etc. Everyone has a favorite and an opinion. Arguments can become heated.

However, no matter how good an athlete is, there comes a time when age, and “wear and tear” on the body brings about a retirement announcement. All that was accomplished becomes past tense. The great athlete sets no new records after retirement.

When it comes to Supreme Beings, the Bible depicts Jehovah God [Almighty God] as the GREATEST OF ALL TIME. Think of a few of His mighty deeds—-Created a marvelous universe, saved Noah and his family from the flood, gave Abraham [100] and his wife Sarah [90] a baby in their old age, parted the Red Sea, fed millions of Israelites in the wilderness for 40 years, healed thousands and did miracles through Jesus, and greatest of all, raised Jesus from the dead. No other God begins to attain to that level of power and glory.

However, sadly, most people, including many Christians, seem to believe that sometime in the last 2000 years this great God grew old and retired. They know He changed a foreign, heathen ruler [Nebuchadnezzar] from a scoffer at the Almighty to an admirer [Daniel 3:1-29]. In like manner, He changed a radical unbeliever named Saul, into the powerful Apostle Paul [Acts 9:1 ff]. Yet, they have no faith to believe He can change any of the evil leaders of today. [Anyone asked God to save Putin this week?] They believe Jesus healed and did miracles in His day, but think that day is over and expect no displays of power today.

Did Almighty God grow old and retire? DEFINITELY NOT! The definition for the Hebrew name for God is “I AM’. He is not a “has been’, “retired”, God. He is still the present tense, at this very moment, GREATEST OF ALL TIME GOD. Consider–“For I am the Lord, I change not”. [Malachi 3: 6]. “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever” [Hebrews 13:8]

Our God, the GREATEST OF ALL TIME GOD, is still on His throne. He has not gone anywhere. Study His Word, pray, have faith, believe, trust Him, expect, and see Him do in our generation what He did in past generations.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Let’s “sort of” continue our thoughts of the past few weeks. Most of you know that I love to read. A good author keeps you sitting on the edge of your seat, enthralled by what you are reading. Each time you turn the page there is a new clue, a new relationship, a new twist to the plot of the story. Often, when I finish a book, I wish that I could personally talk to the author about events in that book.
The greatest book of all time is the Bible, God’s holy, inspired, infallible, Word. How do we read it? I admit, that at times, I have read it casually. I wanted to be able to say that I had read my portion for the day. Have you ever done that? Those days, I usually get very little out of my reading.

However, there is a better, more exciting way to read. Open your Bible. Invite the Author, the Holy Spirit, to sit beside you. Allow Him to reveal the truth and deeper meaning of each passage. Then, every turn of the page speaks to you. Revelation, instruction, correction, comfort, or direction, can be yours. God gave His Word to meet every need we have. I have read the Bible with a “ho-hum” attitude and also with attentive alertness led by the Holy Spirit. Believe me, the second way is much better.

Not only can our Bible study be exciting, our daily lives can also be a glorious adventure. Many folks, even some Christians, “drag themselves out of bed in the morning”, “drag themselves off to work”, “drag themselves home in the evening” and then, “drag themselves off to bed”. Each day is a repeat of the day before. What a sad way to live. There is a greater way to live. It is much more thrilling to get out of bed each morning saying, “Good morning Lord. You are with me and I am with You. Let me see with Your eyes and I want to be Your hands in ministry today”. [ Remember, last week we wrote about letting Jesus use what we have in our hands to bless others and to glorify Him.]

We may make a new friend. We may reconnect with an old friend. We may encounter a person that needs our love and who needs Jesus. Some days will be more exciting than others. At times there will be struggles. However, the constant awareness of Jesus makes each day a blessed day. As a line in the old song says, “every day with Jesus is sweeter than the day before”.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

He’s just a lad, and he’s off on a day of great adventure. He’s on his way to hear Jesus teach and preach. The excitement builds with the thought that he might see a healing, or another type of miracle. The day could be long, so he’s bringing his lunch, five loaves and two fish. He has no idea that he and his lunch will play a huge role in the miracle feeding of thousands. [John 6: 5-14

Peter had spent many hours sailing his fishing boat. As he looked at it that morning, he had no thoughts that later, on that very same day, Jesus would use his boat as a pulpit to preach God’s good news, and that Jesus would then fill that boat with fish. [ Luke 5- 1-8 ]

He’s a despised Samaritan, riding his donkey on the road between Jerusalem and Jericho. In his pocket is some money. His travel bag has bottles of oil and wine. It doesn’t enter his mind that in a few minutes, he will use all of these to save the life of a robbed, beaten, left for dead, Jewish man. [ Luke 10- 25-37 ]

Ordinary people, freely giving of the items they had at hand, making a tremendous difference in the lives of other people. It can be the same for each of us. When we get out of bed each morning and are sensitive to the leading of Holy Spirit, willing to submit whatever we have to Jesus, exciting things will happen. It is amazing how God brings us into contact with people who need exactly what we have to share.

…Someone needs our hug
…Someone needs our words of encouragement
…Someone needs a monetary gift
…Someone needs the meal you prepared
…Someone needs a card, letter, text, or phone call
…Someone needs a helping hand with housework, yardwork, or other chores
…Someone needs to hear you pray for them on the spot
Someone needs to hear the special insight you received from your daily time with the Lord
…Someone needs to know that they are forgiven
…Someone needs to know that God loves them and wants them to become a believer in Jesus

I can imagine that the little lad went to sleep that night thinking: “Wow, Wow, Wow, Jesus used my few loaves and fish to feed thousands.” I suspect that he marveled over that day as long as he lived. May each of us be so aware and submissive to the leading of the Lord that we go to sleep at night marveling at how He has worked through us that day. May we have days we can look back on with joy as long as we live and on into eternity.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Those of you who read these Newsletters regularly know that most of them include a number of Scripture references. Those of you who have heard me preach more than once or twice know that I often say something along the line of : “Don’t believe a word I say unless I back it up with the Bible. Check behind me in your own Bible to make sure that I am accurate”. The important point is to hear :”Thus saith the Lord”, not “Thus saith Ed”. His Word must be our true foundation of belief.

Why is this so important? Because there is a vast, eternal, life-altering difference between “Cultural, religious Christianity” and “True Biblical Christianity”. Heaven or Hell stands in the balance.

Recently, I read a news article in which a dozen or so people gave the reasons they had abandoned Christianity and had left the Church. Not a one of them left a church that was practicing true Biblical Christianity. As each person talked about “what their church believed’,” what their church practiced’, and “what their minister or priest said or did”, I was dismayed. The reasons astounded me. Either all of those folks misunderstood what their church taught or their church was mostly non-Biblical in their ideas, practices, and attitudes. If these churches believed and acted as portrayed in those interviews, then they had long since departed from Biblical beliefs and practices. “_____________Christian Church” was on their church sign, but they were Christian in name only. What a tragic situation.

Let’s remind ourselves of a few truths:
2 Timothy 3:1 ff. “All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: that the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works”.

John 5:39 Jesus said “Search the Scriptures, for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of Me”.

1 Timothy 4:1 ff “Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy: having their conscience seared with a hot iron”.

2 Timothy 3:1 ff “….in the last days…having  a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away”.

“Cultural, religious Christianity” is a sham, a shaky foundation upon which to build your faith. ” True Biblical Christianity” is the solid rock foundation, the Heaven assuring foundation, the God honoring foundation. Choose your foundation carefully !!!!

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

This week, perhaps we can let a little puppy dog remind us of a spiritual truth.

Most days, I am in and out of the house several times. Pamela tells me that when Heidi hears my truck in the driveway, and then hears the truck door slam shut, she starts to whine. That becomes a bark. As I approach the porch, Heidi is jumping on the storm door. As soon as I open the door, she begins jumping all over me. That tells me: 1. She was expecting me to come, 2. She was listening for me to come, and 3. She is totally excited about my coming.

Is there a spiritual lesson here? One of the clearest promises of the New Testament is the return, the Second Coming of Jesus to the earth. Let’s read two of those many promises. In Acts 1:11 the angels told the disciples, “This same Jesus, which is taken from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen Him go into heaven”. Paul writes in 1 Thessalonians 4:16 “For the Lord Himself shall descend from heaven with a shout….”.

Our Lord Jesus is our returning King. His coming may be soon. Do we have the same expectancy as a little dog who awaits his master’s return? Do we listen, praying that Jesus will come at the next moment? Are our spiritual ears attuned to hear that shout and that trumpet blast? Will we receive Jesus with joy and excitement? Or have we fallen so much in love with the things of this world that we have allowed our spiritual ears to become dull, and hard of hearing?

You say, “Ed, no one knows when Jesus will return”. You are correct. That is very true. However, have you ever noticed that when two people share a close, intimate relationship, they begin to pick up hints and clues from one another? So it is, that those who are living in intimate fellowship with the Lord are the ones who are sensing that he is coming soon.

How expectant are you about the coming of Jesus? What would you say about your relationship with Jesus? Is it non-existent,ice cold, cool, warm, hot, or on fire? Let’s remember, the Bible tells us to “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you”. [James 4:8] I am glad that Heidi is excited when I come home. Personally, I want to be more excited about seeing Jesus. What about you?

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Most of us have participated in church or club Business Meetings. A person who is authorized to do so, makes a motion. Another authorized person “seconds” the motion. Discussion and a vote follows. Once in a while, a motion is made and silence fills the room. No one is willing to “second” the motion.. After a few moments, the Presiding Officer states, “The motion fails for a lack of a “second”. That ends the matter.

As I was thinking of the above picture, I was reminded of the wonderful grace given to us by our Lord. The devil comes to us and begins to accuse us, “Remember what you did [said], [didn’t do]? You are a  dirty rotten sinner. How dare you call yourself a Christian. God is ashamed of you. I make a motion that you grovel in feelings of worthlessness, misery, and despair. You are under condemnation”.

Yet, you have acknowledged your sin and failures. You have confessed, repented, and placed them under the blood of Jesus. Therefore, when the devil makes his motion of condemnation, silence fills the universe. The only Person authorized to “second” the devil’s motion is Almighty God, and He is silent. After all, has He not told us, “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. ? [Romans 8:1] He also said, “I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for Mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins “. [Isaiah 43:25] As Jesus told the woman who was caught committing adultery, “Neither do I condemn thee”. He further added, “Go and sin no more”. [John 8:11] The devil’s motion to condemn us fails because God does not “second” it.

God does not give us a license to sin. Indeed, truly born again believers have no desire to sin. We know that we are freely forgiven. As a result, even in our imperfection, we can live in joy, peace, and freedom. God’s amazing grace gives us the liberty to live proudly as “heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ” [Romans 8:17] We live as sons and daughters of the Most High God.[2 Corinthians 6:18]

When the devil comes to accuse you and to make his motion to condemn, laugh in the silence and rejoice in Jesus.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

These days, in order to jog our memories, we use ideas written on paper, Iphones, Ipads, and computers. Some of these devices you can program to “ding” and remind you of an important task. It was not always that way. Many years ago, I often heard the phrase, “Tie a string around your finger so you will not forget”. Did they say that where you grew up? I have no idea whether or not anyone did tie a string. I never saw it happen. However, this is what I did see. Someone would come into our Curb Market [usually a child or a husband]. We would ask, “Can I help you”?They would open their hand, and there in their palm, was a grocery list written in ink. It was written so that they would not forget what they came to buy,

When we read  Isaiah 49: 14 we hear Israel complaining that God has forgotten them. God’s reply is wonderful. God says, a loving mother never forgets her child [49: 15] and He has not forgotten Israel. In fact, the Lord goes on to proclaim, “I have engraved you in the palm of My hand.” [49: 16]

Think of it! Rejoice, shout, leap for joy. As a Believer in Jesus, your Heavenly Father has placed your name in the palm of His hand. You will never be ignored, forgotten, or be unwanted. You are loved with an everlasting love. Jesus echoed this truth when He told us, “I will never leave you nor forsake you”. [Hebrews 13: 5] He also promised, “No one can take you from My Father’s hand”. [John 10: 29]

You know that the children and grandchildren that Pamela and I have live thousands of miles away. Yet, they are constantly on our minds. We think of them, talk to them when we are able, and send gifts regularly. Our love spans the miles. So it is with our Lord. He loves you, thinks of you, gives gifts, and talks with you. You are precious to Him.

Every time you look at the palm of your hand, be reminded, “My name is on the hand of my Heavenly Father”.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Pamela and I were online a few weeks ago. Brian, our son-in-law, was preaching at his church in Australia. As he preached, the Lord began to give me the thoughts for the Newsletter you are about to read.

A quick reading of the New Testament tells us that Jesus often told parables about farming. Paul, also, used that concept.. In order to have a successful harvest you need good seed, good soil, sun, and water. In addition, there must be a person who plants the seed, someone who waters, and someone who does the harvesting.

In our last two Newsletters we have written about “Standing on the Promises of God” in order to receive the blessings of God. However, we all know folks who said, “I tried that and it did not work for me”. Perhaps you have said it yourself. I know that in years past I often felt that way. What might have been our problem, our reason for not receiving?

…Did we have good seed? Did we find and meditate upon a verse, or verses, that promised what we desired? OR, were we just giving it a “shot in the dark”.
…Was there good soil? Were our spirits open to receiving God’s Word? OR, did doubts, unbelief, sin, worldly entanglements choke the growth of the seed?
…Did we water the seed? This is where many of us miss our harvest. We plant, but fail to water. We must water till the harvest comes. In normal farming, the hotter the weather, the more often we must water. We must keep the water flowing. Spiritually, the hotter it gets [when the devil tells us it is not working, that God does not care, that God lied to us, that we need to give up], the more frequently we must water. How do we water? Meditate upon the promises of God. Quote those promises out loud. Thank God that He is true to His Word. In the heat of the battle, keep the water of God’s Word flowing.

When we plant the good seed of God’s Word in receptive hearts and when we continually water that Word we can Stand on the Promises and not fall or fail.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Last week we discussed standing on the promises of God. Let’s continue that thought. First, you must know the promises of God. Someone may reveal a promise to you, or you may discover a promise through your personal Bible study. Once you know, then you can stand. The power to overcome is in God’s Word. Standing is not glamorous, It requires patience and endurance. The devil wants you to back off, quit. You have to keep standing.

How is it that we can patiently stand on a promise of God, even if days, weeks, years, pass before the promise is manifested? We stand because of the truth of God’s Word, and because of the character of God. Please meditate upon the following verses:

…”Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.” Matthew 24: 35

…”Blessed be the Lord, that hath given rest unto His people Israel, according to all that He promised: there hath not failed one word of all His good promises, which He promised by the hand of Moses His servant.” 1 Kings 8: 56

…”For all the promises of God in Him are yea, and in Him, Amen, unto the glory of God by us.” 2 Corinthians 1: 20

…”Faithful is He that calleth you, Who also will do it.” 2 Thessalonians 5: 24

…”That by two immutable things in which it was IMPOSSIBLE for God to lie, we might have a strong consolation, who have fled for refuge to lay hold upon the hope set before us.” Hebrews 6: 18

…”God is not a man, that He should lie, nor a son of man, that He should repent. Has He not said, and will He not do? Or has He spoken, and will He not make it good?” Numbers 23: 19

You may feel small, weak, untrained, but in reality you are like the teenage David. He faced the giant, Goliath. The giant looked big, but David fought in the power of God. The problem you face may look like a giant. However, in reality, as a child of God, you can be a victorious overcomer. Stand on the promises of God. Keep standing as long as it takes to win. Experience God’s victory !

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

How do you sing hymns, listlessly, or enthusiastically? Please, never sing them thoughtlessly. Think of the words you are singing. There is great theology and amazing truth in many of our old hymns. Those truths can instruct, challenge, convict, comfort, or encourage. This week, the Lord reminded me of that wonderful old song, “Standing On The Promises”.

…v.1 “Standing on the promises of Christ my King, Thro’ eternal ages let His praises ring: Glory in the highest, I will shout and sing, Standing on the promises of God
…v.2 “Standing on the promises that cannot fail,When the howling storms of doubt and fear assail, By the living Word of God, I shall prevail, Standing on the promises of God
…v.3 Standing on the promises of Christ the Lord, Bound to Him eternally by love’s strong cord, Overcoming daily with the Spirit’s Sword, Standing on the promises of God
…v. 4 “Standing on the promises I cannot fall, Listening every moment for the Spirit’s call, Resting in my Saviour as my all in all, Standing on the promises of God.”

Notice the truths we are singing—-Even when the storms of life come, those who stand on the promises of God cannot fall or fail. They will prevail. They can overcome daily, listen to the Spirit, and rest in the arms of our Saviour.

Such encouraging words. However, we must actively stand on God’s promises in order to be victorious. In every situation in life, find a promise of God. Then, believe it, stand on it, and do allow the devil to make you back down. As James 4:7 tells us, “Resist the devil and he will flee from you”.

If someone came to your house and told you to get out because he wanted your house, what would you do? You would resist, tell him to leave, and call the sheriff if needed. Your name is on the deed. The house is yours. You have every right to stand and resist. So it is spiritually. Your name is written on the promises of God. They belong to you. Stand on them and refuse to be moved. In Ephesians 6: 10-18, we usually focus on the Armor of God. Please note, in those same verses Paul emphasizes “stand” or “withstand” 4 times. God’s Armor gives you the power to stand.

Today, let’s join our hearts and voices in singing, “Standing on the Promises of God”. Let’s also, learn the promises of God and stand on them daily as we live waiting for the return of Jesus.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

A WONDERFUL HOMECOMING
Homecoming 2022 at Barbee’s Grove was great. The music touched us deeply, the message inspired us, the food and fellowship filled our stomachs and warmed our hearts. We thank all who made the good day happen.

THANK YOU !  THANK YOU !
Our NC Baptist Children’s Homes asked churches to provide money to buy Back To School shoes for the kids in their care. You generous folks at Barbee’s Grove gave lovingly. Offerings totaled $ 1875. When we added $ 1000 from church mission funds that made our total gift $2875. Thank you for loving children in need.
_________________________________________________________________________
I have my personal preferences concerning political parties and political leaders. However, I do not shout these from the pulpit. I don’t push my candidates on other people. Indeed, the people who are elected do make a tremendous difference in the direction our nation goes. Their policies can help, or hinder, our country.

However, the political party and the people holding office, are not the solution to the major problems afflicting this nation. We are fooling ourselves if we think that electing a new slate of leaders will solve the ills we face. If we do not attack the root cause, this nation will never improve.

What is the solution? What will change America? Okay, Pastor Ed, tell us the answer. It’s actually very simple. We need to change the hearts of men. People need a saving relationship with Jesus Christ. Think of it> Truly born again, and properly taught Believers:
   …Cease to hate. They forgive.
…Do not recklessly riot and destroy the property of innocent people.
…Do not kill. They do not murder cops, children, bystanders, and others.
   …Do not scam unsuspecting people.
   …Do not steal
…Love others. Want the best for others. Sacrifice to meet the needs of others.
…Speak, act, and love with the love of Jesus.

Salvation, being born again, is the answer. When men’s hearts are different, the nation will be different. In previous moves of God in the United States, and around the world, amazing things happened. Jails were emptied because no one was committing crime. Bars and saloons closed because the drinkers were saved and stayed home with their families. The economy flourished because workers and bosses treated each other fairly, and because thieves restored what they had stolen. Assault and murder rates dropped drasically. Changed hearts led to changed communities.

Can we covet to pray, witness, and live holy lives? May our nation one more time, turn back to the Lord!!!!

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Would you be agreeable to doing some serious soul-searching this week? Could we do an honest evaluation of our attitudes and actions?

Many very committed Christian leaders believe, and are prophesying, that just before Jesus returns, there will be a great End-Time revival and harvest of souls for the Kingdom of God. In fact, they believe they are already seeing it begin in other parts of the world. When genuine revival happens, and the fire of God falls on America one more time:

…Will you run to the woodpile to add to the flame,or will you run for a water bucket to quench the flame?

…Which will Barbee’s Grove Baptist Church do?

Your first impulse is probably to say, “Of course, I want to be a vital part of that revival. I know our church will get involved. I want to see revival sweep our community”. Before we glibly make that affirmation we might want to consider this—Are we willing to pay the price for revival? Consider these Ideas:

…This move of God will involve more than just a few baptisms and an increase in church membership.Things will happen that we have rarely seen in recent years—-Tears, excitement, praise, spiritual gifts in operation, extended [long] services.. Wood cutters will recognize God’s activity and be thrilled. Water carriers will say, “I want no part of this, and we will not have it in our church”. Sadly, Jesus will pass them by and take His blessings elsewhere.

…Are you willing to repent of any known sin, spiritual apathy, and get your own heart right with God?

…Are you willing to sacrifice time and forgo other activities in order to obey the Lord?

…Are you willing to give up your favorite seat so that a visitor can sit there?

…Are you willing to stand around the walls so that visitors can sit in the pews? In Brazil I saw members standing and visitors sitting.

…Are you willing to attend services that last longer than an hour because people are excited about Jesus?

…Are you willing to attend multiple services each week because folks are being saved and are hungry to grow in the Lord?

…Will you be joyful, or grumpy, if several times a week someone wakes you in the middle of the night pleading ,”I need Jesus. Tell me how to be saved”. Can you do it and will you do it?

…How will you respond if someone comes to you and says, “I’m desperate. Please lay hands on me so that I can be healed”?

…Would you be thrilled to sit through a long Baptismal Service because so many had been born again? Ever wonder how long it took the disciples to baptize 3000 on the Day of Pentecost?

I truly believe that revival fires are coming. Some individuals and some churches will be wood cutters, others will carry water  buckets. What will you personally do, and what will our church do?

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

The Biblical Recorder has been the news journal of North Carolina Baptists since 1833. An article in a recent issue discusses some sad and troubling news. The article dealt with concerns of Pastors. 79 % of Baptist Pastors said that a major concern of theirs was apathy, a lack of commitment, in the lives of church members. Other denominations also said that apathy was a challenging issue. Think of it, 3 out of 4 Pastors serve churches where a serious problem with apathy exists.

Apathy is expressed in attitudes and in action. First, comes a lack of attendance, when well able to attend. Secondly, there is a half-heartedness when actually in church. Next, comes poor tithing and giving habits. Add to the above, an unwillingness to serve in the missions and ministries of the church. It all adds up to an “I really don’t care” mentality. It is no wonder that Pastors are discouraged and that many are leaving the ministry. It is also not a shock that churches are dying all over the nation. [INTERESTING SIDE NOTE–The article also comments that churches with less than 50 attending are much more resistant to change than larger churches. Perhaps this is why those churches stay small and eventually die.]

HOW CAN WE BE APATHETIC
….When Jesus has forgiven our sins, saved us, turned our deadness into life, and has given us an eternal hope and home? [Ephesians 2 : 1 ff ]
….When family members, friends, neighbors, co-workers, and people all over the globe are dying and going to Hell every minute? At the next family reunion, or high school class reunion, look around. Realize that some of those you see at that reunion will not be present at Heaven’s reunion.
….When the signs of the times indicate that Bible prophecy is quickly being fulfilled and that Jesus could return in the next few years? Will we be idle, or busy about the Master’s business when He comes?
….When Jesus was not happy with the church in Ephesus which “had left its first love”. [Revelation 2 :4]
….When Jesus said that He  “would spue out of His mouth the church at Laodicea because they were lukewarm”. [Revelation 3 :16]

Oh my friends, if Jesus was not happy with those churches in Bible days when they were filled with apathy, do we think He is happy with apathy in our churches today? Where is the passion, the commitment to reap the “fields white unto harvest”, and where is the fervor to honor, worship, glorify, and serve Jesus?

Where does Barbee’s Grove rank? Are we apathetic, or “on fire” for Jesus?

My challenge to myself and to you, is the same one that Joshua [24 :15] issued to Israel so long ago:
“And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom you will serve: whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell:BUT AS FOR ME AND MY HOUSE WE WILL SERVE THE LORD””.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

What I know about engines you could put in a pint canning jar and probably have some room left over. I do know that some engines use gas, some diesel, and some other fuels. I also understand that there are small engines for things like chainsaws and lawn mowers, larger engines for automobiles, and humongous engines for aircraft carriers and big jet planes. The bigger the engine, the more power that is produced. Keep that in mind as we ponder the following verse. {Ephesians 3:20}

“Now unto Him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we think or ask….”.

That is an awesome promise. It is amazing. We serve The God who can do more than we can ask, or even think. In fact, He can do “exceeding abundantly” more. Personally, I can think of some pretty big things I have asked the Lord to do. I imagine even greater things. Aren’t you the same way? Have you not, also, thought and asked the Lord for wonderful things you want Him to do?

What is the problem? The Bible promises that our God has the ability and the willingness to do powerful and marvelous things for us. Yet, many do not see it happening in their lives. What are we missing? Perhaps the answer lies in the part of Ephesians 3:20 that I purposely left out when I quoted the verse above. It reads that God does these things “according to the power that worketh in us”. God has remarkable power that He can use on our behalf. He desires to bless us. However, are we willing to allow that power to work in our lives? What is our level of faith? Is the Lord limited by our doubt and unbelief? Go back to our opening illustration. God promises that we can have a jet engine working in our lives. However, if we only have faith for a chainsaw motor, that is all we will receive. A lack of faith, or the smallness of our faith, places a limit on the ability of God to do in us, and for us, what He wishes to do.

I am seeking to study God’s Word and spend time with Him, learning, and believing. I do this to cause my faith to grow. I earnestly desire to have His power working in me so strongly that He can turn loose that “exceeding abundantly more than I can think or ask” manifestation in my life. I am looking for a bigger engine! I encourage you to make that your goal as well!

THANKS

Thank you for your continued support of Barbee’s Grove with your finances. Your faithfulness to give on a regular basis is a blessing to the church and to the ministries and missions we support.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Recently, Pamela and I were online, listening to a service from one of our favorite churches. Someone other than the Pastor was preaching. This man made an unusual statement. He said, “God does not say, ‘My people are destroyed by the devil’. God says,”My people are destroyed by a lack of knowledge’.” [Hosea 4:6] Think of it. God says our ignorance is a greater problem than the devil. In fact, it is our ignorance that allows the devil to trouble and harass us. What type of ignorance? Ignorance of who we are in Christ. Ignorance of what we have in Christ. Ignorance of our authority as Believers in Christ. Ignorance of the love and power of our Lord.

I am going to list below a number of Biblical truths. These are in no particular order. Some Believers know some of these truths, some know a few, many are ignorant of these truths and what they mean for a Believer. As you read these [this is not a complete list], ask yourself these questions: Do I know that truth? Do I believe that truth? Do I act upon that truth?

…We have salvation through believing in our heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and by confessing that truth with our mouth. [Romans 10: 9-13]
…We have power through prayer. [1 John 5: 13-15]
…When we confess our sins God is faithful and just to forgive us of our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness, [1 John 1:9]
…We are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. [Matthew 5: 13-16]
…Our God supplies all our needs through the riches of God in Christ Jesus. [Philippians 4: 19]
…We are redeemed from the curse of the law. [Galatians 3: 13]
…We are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. [2 Corinthians 5: 21]
…We have the mind of Christ. [Philippians 2: 5]
…We have the whole Armor of God. ]Ephesians 6: 10-18]
…There is no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus. [Romans 8: 1]
…We are heirs of God and joint-heirs with Jesus Christ. [Romans 8: 17]
…We have the indwelling Holy Spirit. [John 14: 16, 17]
…We have a God who gives us good gifts. [James 1: 17]
…Sickness and disease come from the devil. [John 10: 10 and Acts 10: 38]
…We resist the devil and he flees from us. [James 4: 7]
…We overcome by the blood of Jesus and the word of our testimony. [Revelation 12: 11]
…We are healed by the stripes of Jesus. [1 Peter 2: 24]
…We have the power in Jesus to impart healing to others. [James 5: 14, 15 and Mark 16: 15- 20]

Remember, this list is only partial. On a scale of 1-10, with 10 equaling “Very Knowledgeable” and 1 equaling “Very Ignorant”, how did you rate? Remember, it takes the following things to make these truths powerful in your life: 1-Knowledge of the truth, 2-Understanding of the truth, 3-Belief in the truth, 4-Speaking the truth, 5-Acting upon that truth.

Feed upon your New Testament. Learn who you are in Christ. Your loving Lord does not want you to be destroyed for a lack of knowledge. Instead, He wants you to be walking in victory, an over-comer, one who lives a blessed life that brings glory and honor to Jesus. MAY IT BE SO!!!!!

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

It could have been your favorite class in school, or your most despised class. You still hated the tests! At times you were warned: “Friday, we will have a test on the last unit of study”. More dreaded were the times you sat down and the Teacher said: “Get out a clean sheet of paper. We are having a “pop” test on the homework assignment from last night”. That’s when your heart did all kinds of “flip flops”.

Over the years of your life you will be tested on a regular basis. Some of these are scheduled. You know the test is coming. For example, you dare not miss the family reunion. Yet, you know that at the reunion you will be confronted with a certain loud mouthed, obnoxious, family member. It’s the one who pushes all your buttons and makes you want to scream! At other times there are “pop” tests. You get cut off in traffic, someone gossips about you, equipment breaks down, you lose your job, etc.

The manner in which we respond to these tests tell us, and others, how mature we are in our walk with the Lord. Do we respond like a Believer, or an unBeliever? Would a casual observer see a Christ-likeness in our response?

How do we prepare for a life of tests? The same way we should prepare in the school classroom. We need to become totally familiar with the assigned materials. In our case, it is the Bible, the true, inspired, infallible Word of God. We must plant God’s Word deeply in our heart, not just casually scan a few verses here and there. [Psalm 119:11]

Secondly, did you realize that you have a hidden advantage at testing time? You have a special relationship with the Teacher, the Holy Spirit. [John 14:26] As you are filled with the Holy Spirit, and as you learn to walk in His Presence, He will guide you into all truth. When the devil brings you a test, it is not cheating to turn to your Holy Teacher and ask, “How should I answer this test”? Just as Jesus defeated the devil with the power of the Holy Spirit and with the Word of God, so can we. [Luke 4: 1-13]

There is no escaping life’s tests. However, our Wonderful Lord and Savior, Jesus, has made it possible for us to get a passing grade each time.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

It is interesting to walk on the beach and watch all the building that is taking place. Little kids, with their buckets and shovels, making mounds of sand. Sometimes, a talented Mom or Dad gets involved. Soon, elaborate, beautiful structures are constructed. A time or two, I have seen a creation that was so artistic that it almost took my breath away.

Night comes. The tides rise and fall. The next morning the sand is smooth and undisturbed. The beautiful work of yesterday is gone, washed away, never to be seen again. Hard work and creativity eroded in a few hours.

As I picture that beach scene in my mind, I think about my life and your life. Every day each of us is building a life. We expend thought, creativity, and lots of effort. Our home life, our spiritual life, our career, and our recreation, are all included in the life we are building. As I thought of this, I was struck by this question: “How much of what I am building will stand the test of time?” Maybe, you should ask yourself the same question. Is the life you are building, the goals you hope to attain, the rewards you desire, eternal or temporary?

Perhaps we should seriously and soberly consider Paul’s admonition [1 Corinthians 3: 11-15]
“For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Christ Jesus.
Now if any man build upon this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, stubble
Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire, and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is
If any man’s work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward.
If any man’s work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire.”

Is our foundation Jesus, the only solid foundation? Are our building materials solid or perishable? Will we suffer loss, or receive a reward?
The wise person will build for eternity!!!!

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Many Christians look at themselves and what they have, and allow the devil to convince them that they have little the Lord can use. They dream of doing great things for the Lord, but don’t think it is possible. Cheer up friends. The devil, as he usually does, is lying to you. Good has placed some useful gifts in your life. Recognize them. Surrender them to the Lord. Allow Him to use them. Let’s think of some unusual, but awesome Biblical examples:

….Noah had a boat. It saved the human race, and the animal kingdom. Genesis 6-8

….Moses had a shepherd’s staff. When he surrendered it to the Lord it became the Rod of God. It parted the Red Sea [Exodus 14:21], brought water from a rock [Exodus 17: 3-6], and victory in battle [Exodus 17:8-13].

….Shamgar had an ox goad, a sharpened stick used to prod the ox to keep pulling the plow. With it, he slew 600 Philistines, the enemies of God’s people. Judges 3:31

….David had a slingshot and a rock. With those, he killed Goliath, the giant who had been tormenting God’s nation. 1 Samuel 17: 40-51

….An unnamed lad had his little picnic lunch-5 loaves and 2 fish. He gave it to Jesus and 5000 families were fed. John 6: 8-13.

….Jesus had a wooden cross and a few nails. With these He brought grace, forgiveness of sin, and the offer of salvation to all of mankind. 1 Corinthians 15: 1-4

Now, let me mention two contemporary examples:

….In Brazil, I preached in the slums, in a tar paper shack with a dirt floor. It was a humble place. Yet the owners were thrilled to allow their home to be used as a preaching station where their family, friends, and neighbors could hear about Jesus.

….I remember an old, worn-out station wagon. It was probably held together by duct tape and rust. Each Wednesday it came to church so full of young boys that they were hanging out the windows. The owner of that old vehicle drove through the community, picking up boys for the church RA program. So many boys were spiritually blessed by that old car.

What is in your hand? Ignore the devil and offer it to Jesus. As you offer that which is in your hand to Jesus, you will be astounded at the amazing things He will do with what you allow Him to use. Ordinary things, surrendered to Jesus, become powerful building blocks in the Kingdom of God.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

“Jesus said, Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto Me: for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven. And He laid His hands on them….” [Matthew 19:14,15]

Are not those some special verses? Children were precious to Jesus. They are also precious to us. That is why I am so thankful that we could have Vacation Bible School this week. Our number of children is small. Yet, each child is a gift from God.

I look back over 65 years to my own time in VBS. I remember cookies and Cool-Aid, always wishing I could get a second helping. I remember certain teachers, even some of the dresses they wore. I remember the stories I was taught. Some of those stories I still use in my teaching and preaching today. Bible verses I memorized pop into my mind from time-to-time. I think of special people, like my sweet wife, Pamela, who gave their heart to Jesus during VBS. So many wonderful memories. I thank God that West Albemarle Baptist Church cared about me and all the other kids in the community and scheduled a VBS each summer.

I say it again, I am so thankful that Barbee’s Grove cares enough about our kids to have a VBS. Thank you leaders, teachers, craft ladies, cooks, helpers, musicians, and all the others who made VBS possible. Thank you parents and grandparents for bringing your kids. Adults, thank you for attending your own special class. At this point, someone may be thinking, “I did not help and I did not attend. I had no part in VBS”. Let me ask a question, “Have you contributed to the church this year?:” If so, your gifts went into the Church Budget. That is where we get the funds to pay for VBS. You did help with VBS, even if you did not realize it.

I pray that lives have been changed this year. Perhaps a child is nearer to becoming a Christian. Perhaps others have experienced spiritual development that will bless them in years to come. I pray that every person will have the same type of fond memories that I have of my own years in VBS.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

There is a little chorus that has this phrase, “We are one in the bond of love”. “We are one in the bond of love” emphasizes the wonderful truth of the amazing relationships true believers have with one another. Love of Jesus and love for Jesus, unites our hearts as one.

I think of how this has been true in my own life. I have gone on mission trips to other nations. I knew only a few words in their language. They knew very little English. Interpreters, hand gestures, and hugs were our method of communication.Yet, as we sang, worshiped, and shared, an amazing bond of Christian fellowship developed. Even today, many years later, I get teary-eyed thinking of specific precious Brazilian brothers and sisters in the Lord.

Then, I think of relationships with fellow Americans. Some of these relationships are a few years old. Others, go back 60 years or more. I may go days, weeks, even years, and not have an opportunity to contact some of these dear friends. Even so, they are treasured in my heart. When we do make contact, it’s like we just resume the conversation we had the last time we were together. There is something about our mutual love for Jesus that makes us one in the Spirit.

In today’s world, with so much hatred, violence, and uncertainty, these Godly friends are a true blessing. I value these beloved friends that the Lord has united with me in His love. I pray for them. I thank the Lord for each one. I contact them as often as is possible. If it is doable, I see them face-to-face. I look with anticipation to the time we will be together in Heaven, never again to be separated..

Today, my desire for every reader of this Newsletter, is that you be able to rejoice because the Lord has given you friends who are “one in the bond of love” with you.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Many, many years ago I learned about a lady who was a member of my church. I had been there several years and she had never attended. I went for a visit. She graciously welcomed me. When I mentioned attending church, she began to tell me about all her “aches and pains”. She had so many medical conditions that kept her from attending. I began to feel sorry for her. In fact, mentally, I was thinking about asking the Deacons to take up a love offering to buy her a hospital bed and one of those lift chairs.

I didn’t mention the love offering and I am glad I didn’t. She kept talking. The more she talked, the more she incriminated herself. First, she gave me a cassette tape and told me that her daughter was in a gospel singing group. She mentioned that she always went to hear the group sing. I thought, “Church is a half mile from your house. Those singings are miles away. Church is usually one hour, most gospel singings last much longer”.

The lady kept talking. She dug the hole even deeper. She had a grandson that played for the local high school football team. She always went to see him play. At church, she could have walked 10 feet on level ground and been in a padded pew in a climate controlled building. At the football stadium, she had to walk at least 50 yards, climb the bleacher steps, sit on a concrete slab, in the heat of August and the cool dampness of November.

I kept my mouth shut, but I quickly knew that her lack of church attendance was not physical, but spiritual. She just did not love Jesus, or His Church, as much as she said she loved them. I stayed at that church for many more years. She continued her other trips, but never once set foot in a church service.

Friends, I deal with reality. I know that there are times and seasons when a person cannot attend. Some jobs require Sunday work. Law enforcement, medical personnel, and others are often on the job during worship service hours. Sometimes we must attend to sickness within the family. I doubt my Mom missed 10 Sundays in 40 years. Then, she did not attend at all the last 19 months she spent caring for my bed-fast Dad. After he passed away, she was right back in her usual spot. A few times I have had my own issues. When I had kidney stones, Gabriel could have been blowing his trumpet, Bev Shea could have been the guest singer, and Billy Graham, the preacher, and I still would have stayed home. In fact, my moans and groans would have ruined the service for everyone else.

My concern is not with those who are Providentially hindered, those who have legitimate reasons for absence. My concern is for those who say that they love Jesus, yet seldom attend any church. Meanwhile they participate in other activities that require more time and energy than church attendance. The Lord admonishes us, “Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching”. Hebrews 10:25

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Let’s suppose that we are in the Sanctuary at Barbee’s Grove Baptist Church. It’s a hot summer day and brilliant sunshine streams through those stained glass windows. In addition, all the lights are on. The room is glowing. Each of us holds a candle. As we light our candles, the glow increases.

Now, let’s imagine the opposite. It is Midnight. A storm is raging. No moon or stars can be see. Power is out. No light anywhere. Now your candle becomes vitally important. As we light our candles, we make a real difference. We penetrate the darkness, giving light to the room.

What is the lesson?

It is important that you let your light shine as you worship the Lord in His House regularly. This is what we are instructed to do. Your light adds to the light that is already there. However, it is even more vitally important that you become a beacon of light in a dark, sinful, world. Our world walks in the darkness of sin, degradation, hatred, violence, prejudice, war, and many other types of evil.

Is the light you have as a believer in Jesus shining in the darkness of this present age? Do you treat clerks and waitresses with courtesy? If you need to make a legitimate complaint, do you do it with calmness, and peacefulness? Do family, friends, and co-workers hear you gently mention the Name of Jesus? As others listen to you talk about the materials you read, the music you hear, and the TV and movies you watch, do they quickly realize that you strive to live a holy, Godly, life? Are you a positive witness to your neighbors as they see your car pull out each Sunday, heading to the Lord’s House? OR, do they know you are headed out to shop, or play? OR do they see your vehicle never leave the driveway? Are your spoken and written words filled with profanity, or with Christlikeness? When given the opportunity, do you minister to the troubled and share Jesus with unbelievers?

Is your light shining in the darkness? Jesus said [Matthew 5:14-16] “Ye are the light of the world. ..Let your light so shine among men that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.”

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Last Saturday, an event happened that I had not experienced in the past four or five years. Years ago it was a common happening. Pamela and I were heading to a picnic with her siblings. We were driving on the Concord Road [Hwy 73]. I came around a curve, started downhill, and had to stop for a long line of traffic. I could see blue lights flashing about 50 yards ahead. I thought, “This is a strange stretch of road for an accident”. As we inched ahead, I suddenly realized that this was the first traffic stop for a license check that I had experienced in years. A nice officer checked my Drivers License and my car tag. Since all was in order, he handed my license back and sent me on my way.

Off and on, I thought about that license check for the remainder of the day. I realized that once I got in that line, there was no turning back. The local Drivers License Office was only a few hundred yards away. If all was not in order, that would do me no good. I was already in line and they were closed. Too late to  make any changes.

The Holy Spirit reminded me that a “credential” check is coming for me and for every one of the billions of people who have lived on planet earth. We will come around a curve [it may be death, or it could be the Rapture of the Church]. At that moment, we will face Almighty God, Creator of Heaven and Earth. He will be checking our credentials. Are we saved? Born again? In a personal relationship with Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior? A new creature in Christ? We phrase it so many ways. It all comes down to one question. “What do we believe and say about Jesus?’

If our salvation credentials are in order, the Lord will point us ahead to a glorious future in Heaven. If not in order, we will be shown a side road to eternal torment and suffering. Since we never know the hour the credential check is coming, it is vitally important that we make sure that all is in order now. Don’t wait till it is too late!

Consider these verses:
Matthew 25:13 “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour when the Son of Man cometh”.
Hebrews 9:27 “It is appointed unto men once to die, but after this, the judgment”.
Romans 10:9 “That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved”.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Many of our ancestors were hard working, industrious, thrifty, and sometimes, artistic. Think of it. Until recently, many pioneer women sewed most of the clothes their families wore. Later, usually during the colder months, those women would sit around the stove or fireplace. They would pull out the remnant bag and begin to sew odd pieces of cloth together. These remnants were the leftover pieces from other garments, or the pieces from a “mess up”, a miss cut, or perhaps a piece that had been salvaged from a worn out garment. These pieces were sewn together, sometimes rather haphazardly, and sometimes with intricate design. Batting and a backing were added. A wonderful quilt was created. It all started with scraps of cloth.

When Pamela’s family divided her Mother’s possessions, she brought home an older quilt that would fit a single bed. With her permission, I claimed that quilt for the recliner in my office. It was cozy as I read, or napped, this winter. The quilt is a treasure because it was created by a family member from the Kentucky mountains.

Most of us have bags of “scraps” in our lives. Past hurts, disappointments, as yet unanswered prayers, betrayals, job losses, the list goes on and on. These “scraps” can be a burden that weigh us down, discourage us, and rob us of our joy. OR, we can allow the Lord, the Master Craftsman, to take these “scraps” and work them together to create something that will be a great blessing and comfort to us and to others. In the Lord’s creative hands those seemingly useless, unnecessary, often hurtful pieces of our past, can actually become a treasure.

The song writer got it right:
“Something beautiful, something good
All my confusion He understood
All I had to offer Him was brokenness and strife
But, He made something beautiful of my life”

In a similar vein, Dolly Parton had her “Coat Of Many Colors”. It was made of “scraps”, but it was special. Why? It was “sown with love”. It is amazing what the Master Craftsman can do when we allow Him to work with the broken pieces of our life. Every stitch will be sewn with God’s amazing love.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Growing, maturing, Christians believe God’s Word. They trust God’s Word. They act upon it. It is the foundation for all they believe and do. But, did you know that non-believers, agnostics, skeptics, and atheists also believe and act upon God’s Word? Naturally, they would deny it. In fact, many proclaim the Bible to be irrelevant, out-of-date, and of no use at all. However, probably unknowingly, they still believe and trust to be true, parts of the Bible.

Consider these two verses that were written well over 3000 years ago:
Genesis 1:12 “And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding…after his kind: and God saw that it was good”.
Genesis 8:22 “While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest…”.

It may be a person putting one seed in a potting soil container, or it could be a farmer planting multiple acres of a crop. Both depend upon the truth of God’s Word as found in those two verses. Believer, or non-believer, both trust God’s Word to be true. Everything else being normal, planting seeds leads to harvest. The harvest is always governed by the type of seed planted. Plant corn, harvest corn. Plant cotton, harvest, cotton. It always works that way. Planting is an act of faith. Those who plant, trust God to be true.

Our God is a God of order. Sunrises and sunsets can be calculated to the exact minute. High and Low tides can also be calculated. The sun always rises in the east. You get the picture. Truly, He is an awesome God!!!

Today, I encourage you to hunger for God’s Word. Listen to it being taught and preached often. Study it regularly. Trust it completely. Act upon what it instructs you to do. Then you will reap the wonderful benefits promised to you by the Lord. AMEN

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Hannah, our sixteen year old granddaughter, is awesome as she leads praise and worship at her church in Australia. Lately, a song she sings, keeps running through my mind. I find myself hearing those phrases many times a day. Title of the song is, “The Waymaker”. God is called the “Waymaker”.

One of the phrases which sticks with me is, “He made a way when there was no way”. The Bible is full of examples. In Exodus, we read that the Children of Israel were trapped. They had no hope of escape. Suddenly, their Lord parted the Red Sea and Israel walked across on dry ground. God “made a way when there was no way”. Many times the Lord has done the same for me and my family. I’m sure that some of you have that same testimony. The God who can make a way when there seems to be no way, is certainly worthy of our worship and obedience.

Two other lines in that song say:
“Even when I don’t see it, He’s working”
“Even when I don’t feel it He’s working”

Those thoughts bring me great comfort. They remind me that our Lord never takes a nap or goes on vacation. In some situations, I may not see it or feel it, but He is always working on my behalf. Even in those times we feel dull, dry, dead, lifeless, and abandoned by God, He is still working to bless us. During those times we trust our Lord. We walk by faith, and not by sight or feeling. As Jeremiah 29:11 says, “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not evil, to give you an expected end [ hope in your latter end ]”. Romans 8:28 reminds us “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose”.

Truly, our Lord is “The Waymaker”. Let that fact give you great comfort and peace. Expect His presence and blessing in your life. Honor your Lord. Then respond to the call of Jesus, who is “The Way”, when He said, “Come follow Me”.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Luke [ 18:9-14 ] mentions an interesting parable that Jesus told. It seems that two men went to the temple to pray. The first, a Pharisee, a learned religious leader, spent his prayer time telling God what a great man he was. This Pharisee went to great lengths extolling his virtues. He congratulated himself that he was so much better than the poor sinner over in the corner.

Meanwhile, the “poor sinner”, the publican, was too ashamed to even look up to Heaven. He cried out, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner”.

The Pharisee knew the Old Testament Scriptures. However, he only knew them in his head, not in his heart. Consider what he should have remembered:|
Proverbs 16:18—“Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall”.
Psalm 34:18—“The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken spirit; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit”.
Isaiah 64:6—“…all our righteousness is as filthy rags…”.

The publican got it right. He came to the Lord with that “humble, contrite spirit”. Should we not have that same reverence as we approach Holy God? Jesus tells us that the Pharisee “prayed with himself”. God was not listening. The publican went away “justified”. He was in right standing with God. Paul tells [2 Corinthians 5:21] “For He [God] made Him [Jesus] to be sin for us, who knew no sin: that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him”.

Friends, we are instructed to live holy, Godly lives as believers. However, we do not earn righteousness. Romans 5:17 tells us that righteousness is a “gift” from God to believers. What should we do with this most generous gift? Receive the gift and then thank the Giver [God]. Let’s also remember that the attitude with which we approach Holy God determines the results of our visit. We must approach Him with reverence, awe, and worship. We must also come with love and consideration of others.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Remember seeing those old time portraits and photographs from 100-150 years ago? Almost every person looks as if they were eating sour pickles. There is hardly a smile in sight. Was there no joy in their lives? I may have had the wrong impression, but in my early years it seemed that we were instructed to leave our smiles outside when we came into the church building. I remember a service when I was a Pastor. We had several moments of laughter, As we were leaving, one old codger snarled at me, “I did not come to church to laugh. If this is the way it is going to be then I will take my membership elsewhere”. Many times after that I wished that I could have handed him his church letter and told him, “Enjoy your new church”.

Why do I write all this? Because, as we were exiting the building this past Sunday, several members said, “That was the funniest Quarterly Conference I have ever experienced”. Indeed, there was much laughter, joy, and teasing, as we transacted church business. One of the things I especially enjoy about Barbee’s Grove Baptist church is the sweet fellowship which includes laughing, teasing, rejoicing, and loving our fellow members.

Every service should have worship and praise. There should be seriousness and solemnity. After all, we are dealing with eternal souls and eternal matters. However, there is also plenty of room for laughter and joy. Consider two things the Lord says to us:

  1. “… the joy of the Lord is your strength”. [Nehemiah 8:10]
  2. ” A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones”. [Proverbs 17:22]

God created us with the capacity to laugh. Good, clean, laughter is healthy. It contributes to our well being. The church is a perfect place for a joyous laugh. After all, we are born again, forgiven, enjoying the love of Jesus, have the comfort and guidance of the Holy Spirit, and are on the road to Heaven. Knowledgeable Christians are the happiest people on earth.

Times may be good, or they may be bad, but I plan to laugh and rejoice all the way to Glory. Then, eternal life will be even more fun. Join me in that journey.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Those of you who have gone past our house know that we have a fence around the back yard. When we first got Heidi she was so small that she could escape through the bars of that fence. Because of that, we always had her on a leash when we took her out. Now, months later, she is too big to get through the fence. Recently, we decided to let her run free. We opened the door and told her that she could go out. Heidi just stood at the open door and did not move. We tried over and over, but never could coax her to go out without that leash. Yesterday, I left the door wide open as I walked to the far end of the yard. Heidi never moved from the sun-porch.

Heidi could be free to run and play, but somehow she is fearful, mentally tied to that leash. She reminds me of so many people in our world today. First, there are those we call “lost”, “unsaved”, or “non-believers”. They are chained in Satan’s kingdom and will never be free until they accept Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Ephesians 2:1-22 gives the sad description of unbelievers, but also shows the glorious hope and change that comes to those who believe.

Secondly, it is sad, but there are many who are believers, who are saved, on their way to Heaven, but who still live tied to a leash. Remember the Children of Israel? They were excited when the Lord delivered them from slavery in Egypt. Yet, every time things got tough, they started talking about returning to Egypt and saying, “Those were the ‘good old days'”. What are the chains that bind believers? It may be spiritual ignorance. It could be religious tradition. Perhaps, it is an habitual, besetting sin. For some it is fear, unforgiveness, anger, or past hurts. Those are but a few of the possibilities. Those believers could be free. They could enjoy life and their faith to a much fuller extent. Yet, like Heidi, mentally, emotionally, or spiritually, they are still tied to a leash.

Let’s consider some things the Bible teaches us:

Romans 6:22 –  “But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life”.
John 8: 32 – “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free”.
John 8:36 – “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed”.
Galatians 5:1 – “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage”.

These awesome words offer us God’s deliverance from bondage. He offered the Israelites a Promised Land. He makes a blessed promise to you as well. Believe God’s Word. Let Christ truly set you free. As Pamela and I are encouraging Heidi to live free, the Lord is also offering you freedom from your leashes. Learn to walk in that freedom. Life is so much more wonderful and enjoyable when we learn to live in the truth of God’s freedom.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

There is an interesting tidbit of history found in Matthew 27:32. “And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear His cross.” Evidently, Jesus was so battered by the crown of thorns, the beatings, and the scourging with the whip, that He was too weak to carry His own cross. The Romans selected Simon to carry that cross for Jesus. An unknown man, yet his name lives forever in Christian history. Wonder how Simon felt? Angry? Frustrated? Treated unfairly? No matter how he felt, he had no choice in the matter. He did what the Roman soldiers dictated, or he faced their wrath.

Earlier in His ministry, Jesus issued this challenge, “And He said to them all,’If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me'”. [Luke 9:23] Notice these clear instructions:

  1. “If”–We get to choose. Each of us makes our own decision concerning following Jesus. No one compels us.
  2. “All”—It is an open invitation to all. No one is excluded. But, we all must choose. Do we follow Jesus, or do we turn away?
  3. “Deny himself”—We choose to make Jesus the Lord of our lives. He comes first. His plans take precedent over our plans.
  4. “Take up our cross daily”— It’s a one time decision, which is reaffirmed every day. We choose to pay the price of being a true disciple of Jesus. It may involve the way we spend our time or money, or our willingness to do what is right even if we are ridiculed, or perhaps some harsher suffering. Christians all over the world lose jobs, are jailed, or are killed for their faith. There is a cross to bear, a price to pay.

Is it worthwhile to choose our cross and to follow Jesus? Read Matthew 19: 25-30. Notice especially 19:29, “And every one that hath forsaken houses, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for My name’s sake, shall receive an hundredfold, and shall inherit everlasting life”. It does pay to choose Jesus

Simon was  compelled to carry the cross. You and I get to choose. May we choose wisely. Our earthly happiness and our eternal future depends upon the choice we make.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

We invite you to gather with us this week as we celebrate the events of Easter week. The Maundy-Thursday Service will be Thursday, April 14, at 6:30 pm. It is always special as we celebrate our Lord’s death through Communion. The Sunrise Service will be Easter morning at 6:45 am. Breakfast, and a time of fellowship follows at 7:00. At 8:00 am we return to the Sanctuary for a celebration of our Lord’s resurrection. Please join us!!

For several weeks I have been pondering the thought of, “How do we equate the word, ‘celebration’, with the Crucifixion”? After all, crucifixion was a most horrible way to die. Even before the cross, Jesus was brutally whipped. His body was torn, battered, and bruised. Then came the cross, the nails, the spear, the death. What is there to celebrate about that torture?

Let’s think of reasons to celebrate:

  1. The provision for physical healing for all who will receive it by faith–“By His stripes we are healed”. [1 Peter 2:24]
  2. Our sins were placed upon Jesus– “Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree”. [ 1 Peter 2:24]
  3. We get to exchange our spiritual deadness for spiritual life–“We being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness”. [ 1 Peter 2:24]
  4. We are redeemed from the curse of the law and receive the blessing of Abraham–“Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written ‘Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree”. that the  blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ…”. [ Galatians 3:13, 14a]

If those four reasons do not put a shout of celebration on your lips, you need to go back and read them again. Hallelujah, Thank You, Jesus, and Praise the Lord ought to explode from our very being in gratitude for all Jesus did on the cross. When we really realize, believe, and accept personally for ourselves, all that the cross means , joy should well up within us.As the little chorus says:

Oh how He loves you
Oh how He loves me
Oh how He loves you and me
He gave His life
What more could He give
Oh how He loves you and me

Truly, every moment of every day, and especially this week, we need to celebrate Jesus. His love is a saving love. His love is an eternal love. His love is a personal love for each of us. Rejoice in that love!!!

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Today, let’s be reminded of God’s wonderful love and amazing grace toward us. Think of the events in that Upper Room on the night before Jesus was crucified. Jesus told that He would be betrayed and forsaken by those men with whom He was eating. Of course, all of the disciples loudly declared that they would never be guilty of such deeds. [Mark 14:31]

Let’s go now to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus asked His friends to watch and pray. He, then, poured out His heart to His Heavenly Father. A great agony of prayer took place in that garden. But, how involved were the disciples? They were asleep. [Mark 14:38] Jesus said several things to them. However, notice this comment: “The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.” [Mark 14:38]

God recognizes our humanity. Yet, He still offers us love and grace. Have you ever vowed to do more praying, have a deeper study of the Bible, be more faithful in church attendance, take a meal to a hurting family, share Jesus with a nonbeliever? You had the best intentions. Did you always follow through? Personally, I’m sad to say, it might take an adding machine to calculate how many times during my life when I had good intentions, but my flesh “wimped out”. Some of you might have to make the same confession.

Amazingly, God still loves us and offers us grace. Let’s be reminded: this does not excuse sorriness, laziness, or sin. Let’s make the assumption that we are endeavoring to do our best. Even the Apostle Paul faced the same dilemma. “The good that I would do, I do not, but the evil which I would not, that I do.” [Romans 7:19] He then asks, ” Who has the power to rescue this miserable man from the unwelcome intruder of sin and death?” [Romans 7:24 TPT] The answer comes back: ” I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” [Romans 7:25] He goes on to affirm: “There is now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death.” [Romans 8:1,2]

Rejoice, fellow Believer, the Lord knows your frailties. He loves you anyway. Then, through your walk with Jesus, the Holy Spirit enables you to keep growing, improving, and walking in victory. Read the Book of Acts. Those same weak disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit. [Acts 2] They did not become perfect. However, they lived in great power and love as they followed Jesus. We can be filled and live as they lived! May it be so!!

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Those of you who have heard me preach more than once or twice, know that I often joke about my singing ability, or my lack thereof. Indeed, I do often wish that I had the ability to sing in a way that blesses others. However, the Lord did not make me that way.

At times, many of us do question why the Lord made us the way we are. We ask such questions as: “Why was I born into this family? Why in this time in history? Why in this part of the world? Why do I look this way? Why do I have certain talents and abilities and lack others? Why have certain people and situations been allowed to impact my life?” The list of such questions goes on and on.

As I was pondering these thoughts, the Holy Spirit reminded me of a time and an event in Israel’s history. It was during the building of the first Temple to the Lord. Here is the specific verse that came to mind. [ 1 Kings 6:7 ] “And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building”.

Measurements were taken. Then at the quarry, every stone, large and small, was fashioned to fit its exact spot in Soloman’s glorious Temple. All was prepared beforehand, so that no adjustments had to be made.Perhaps, we can take two lessons from that historical event. First, each one of us, you included, are unique, “One of a Kind”. God has given each one of us our own particular talents, abilities, and experiences, in order to shape us for our role in His Kingdom on earth. God has a place and ministry for you that no one else can fill. You are irreplaceable. Remember, that when the Holy Spirit reminds you of some area in your life that needs to change, it is not that God is angry with you. NO! It is the Lord’s way of sanding off some rough edges so that you will fit better in your assigned spot.

Secondly, God’s reasons for our personal talents, experiences, etc., is that He is preparing us for our ministry during the Millennial reign of Christ and for eternity. The Bible does not give great detail, but there are several Scriptures that imply we will be doing more than sitting on a cloud, strumming a harp.  God has exciting things for you beyond the grave!. We are now in training for that service.

In conclusion, rejoice and thank God that You are You. He is the Potter. You are the clay. Allow Him to mold you, shape you, and use you, for His glory!!!

This week, we want to use the Newsletter to inform you of a number of events:

  1. An Area Wide Revival has been planned for this Fall.

Food needs to be at the church no later than Sunday, May 1. A list of requested items is available at the church. Please make sure that all donated foods are not out of date.

As we look toward Easter, we need to remember to focus on the main person. It is not the Easter Bunny. Jesus, dying upon the cross for our sins, and rising from the grave to become our Everlasting Lord and Savior, should be our focus. Sins forgiven, and worship of our Living Lord, are tremendous reasons to celebrate. We look for His coming at any moment.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

If I counted correctly, this is Newsletter 104. Who knew that when I started writing two years ago that I would still be at it. Early predictions were that the Covid pandemic would be over in two weeks, three at the most. The experts were wrong. Covid is still a problem.

In the meantime, Thank You for reading what the Lord has given me each week. I have kept my own copies in a notebook. From time-to- time, I go back and read some of the older writings. It is interesting to read, and to often be blessed, by what was written months ago. I know that some of you have kept your own notebooks. My hope and prayer is that your notebook will become a devotional book that will bless you in future years.

Over the past two years, Barbee’s Grove has had no services, website services, under the oak tree services, masked social distancing services, and normal services. You have been faithful. THANK YOU. God has blessed Barbee’s Grove through your continued faithfulness. However, we have not grown as much as we had hoped. There are still empty seats at each service. Even so, I am excited about something our Son-in-law said as he preached in Australia last week. [Their Sunday morning is our Saturday night, so we get to watch their service online each week.]

As he preached, Brian asked the question, “When is the barn the most empty?” Of course the answer is, “Right before the harvest. The harvest refills the barn.” Amen! Friends, there is coming an End Time, right before Jesus returns, harvest on the horizon. Let’s be out in the fields reaping that harvest. Our present world situation has people questioning, fearful, and open to the Gospel. Let’s be quick to share Jesus. He, alone, is the Hope of the world. May the barn we call Barbee’s Grove Baptist Church be filled with a fresh harvest of born again souls who have become a part of God’s Family. Are we preparing ourselves to accept, love, and disciple these new believers? Is our building equipped to handle an inflow of seeking souls?

Last week, I emphasized the need to pray, and to give, to alleviate the misery caused by the present crisis in the Ukraine. Have you been praying? I also mentioned that our gifts should go to legitimate organizations that will use them wisely. Here are two such organizations. [Put “Ukraine Crisis” on your check].

NC Baptists on Mission                                   Samaritan’s Purse

Cary, NC 27512                                              Boone, NC 28607-3000

This week, someone made the comment, “Ten years from now, we will have a hard time living with ourselves if we don’t do all we can now to help a hurting nation.”

Some of you may be having a hard time even paying your own bills. The Lord understands. Others of us have the means to help. If you are in that latter group, please do all you can. God makes this special promise [Proverbs 19:17] “He that hath pity upon the poor, lendeth to the Lord; and that which he hath given will He pay him again.” You cannot lose when you invest with the Lord!

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

From the time I type and send this Newsletter to our Deacon Chairman until you get it online takes several days. Those who get a paper copy by mail have a longer wait. With that in mind, I realize that what I write today may be out of date when you read it. However, I think this will still be relevant.

We all know that the world situation is dire. Russia’s unprovoked attack upon Ukraine is pure evil. It pains us to see the suffering that is taking place. However, we are not totally helpless. Powerful changes could come if we spend quality time in prayer. Are you doing that?

  1. Pray for the Christians in both nations. I know people [including family and friends] who have been there to share Jesus. Those Believers have much to lose. They need the fresh revelation of God’s presence and love.
  2. Pray for protection and wisdom for the President of Ukraine.
  3. Pray for sanity in the Kremlin.
  4. Pray for the military and civilians in Ukraine who are fighting for their existence. Ask the Lord to send warring angels to their aid. I have already heard reports that missiles were sighted, but seemed to disappear before any target was hit. Could an angel have snatched them out of the sky? Only the Lord knows. God often used such tactics in the Old Testament to bring confusion to an enemy and victory to His people.
  5. Pray for wisdom for our own governmental leaders. It does not matter if you like or dislike them. They are the ones who will make decisions that will help, or hurt, the situation.
  6. Pray for open hearts and open pocketbooks that will support legitimate organizations who will be ministering to refugees now, and to the people of the Ukraine after the war is over.

Each time I feel helpless I am reminded by the Lord, “Just bow your head and pray”.  I am also reminded that it was prophesied that such evil would be a sign of the soon return of Jesus. There are times I find myself earnestly listening for the trumpet to blow and the summons, “It is time to come home My children”. It is so reassuring to know that when all comes to an end, evil is defeated and our Lord reigns victorious. Aren’t you glad to be a Believer and to be on the winning team?

  6. Our Baptist Men’s Day was a blessing. Good food, special fellowship, and a great testimony from Barret Eatman, and another from Gary Hamilton at breakfast, made for a special day. Thank you to all who made it happen.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Today, I am thinking of warm summer evenings, about 65-70 years ago. One of our favorite activities was to go out into the yard and watch the lightning bugs. It seems that the area around our house was usually full of them. If we could, we would gently grab one in our hand. Then we would slowly open our hand and watch it glow as it sat on our palm. Sometimes, we used a canning jar to catch as many as possible. [We quickly learned to punch holes in the lid so that they could have air]. The darker the night, the more those bugs glowed.

My favorite school subject was history. My studies lead me to believe that this present moment is the darkest period of American history in well over 100 years. Politically and spiritually our nation has grown increasingly dark. Night is falling quickly.

However, there is no need for despair or depression. All is not hopeless and lost. Fellow Believers, now is our time to shine. One lightning bug is not a spotlight. But he does bring light to the space he occupies. The Lord does not ask you to shine like the sun. He does ask you to shine where you are. Also, the more of us who let our lights shine, the brighter our dark world will be.

Listen to this prophecy concerning Jesus [Isaiah 60:1-3 : “Arise, shine; for the light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee. For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee  and His glory shall be seen upon thee. And the Gentiles shall come to the light and kings to the brightness of Thy rising.”

Now, let’s hear what Jesus said about us, and what He call us to do [Matthew 5:14, 16] “Ye are the light of the world………Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in Heaven.”]

Remember this wonderful truth: Light always overcomes darkness. That is so encouraging. So, let’s keep allowing Jesus, the Light of the World. to shine through us. May it continue as long as we live. Then, we will inherit this glorious promise [Revelation 22:5 “And there shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign for ever and ever.”

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Those of you who have access to Facebook already know that I gave Pamela a couple dozen roses for Valentines Day. I figured that she deserved them. After all, in May, she will have put up with me as her husband for 55 years. [Some of you are probably thinking, “Two dozen was not nearly enough. She deserves a lot more.”]

Tuesday morning, as I was eating breakfast, I was face-to-face with those roses. Suddenly, without realizing what I was doing, I heard myself say, “Thank you, Lord, for creating beauty”. My thoughts continued in that direction. God could have created a drab world, a world without color. Instead, there is beauty all around. Think of flowers, trees, sunsets, and sunrises. So many gorgeous sights. Then, God could have created only two or three types of food. Instead, there are so many fruits, vegetables, and meats to delight our taste buds.Individually, we may not like all that is available, but the choices are so many, that there is something for everyone.

Next, think of the people the Lord created. He could have made the first man and woman and then created a duplicator that made everyone else an exact copy. Imagine a world of 7 billion people who were all alike. Not a pretty picture, is it? In reality, we are all different. We are different races, sizes, have different personalities, talents, and abilities. Why? God likes variety and He made us that way.

As the Lord finished His creation, He said, “It was good”.Indeed it was. God made it all. Then, out of the goodness of His heart He gave it to man. He told man to enjoy and to be blessed in that wonderful creation. Man has messed up some of what God created. However, there is still beauty, provision, and blessing for those who will seek it.

Let’s not forget God’s greatest act of love. That is when He sent Jesus , His Son, to live as a man, to die on the cross, and to be resurrected. He purchased our eternal salvation.

Today, I encourage you to enjoy all the wonderful beauty and blessings that the Lord has prepared for you. He did it because He loves you. Most of all, rejoice in Jesus.  Enjoy the forgiveness, peace, holiness, righteousness, guidance, and comfort that He gives.

Oh, what a Great God we have!! Praise His Holy Name!!!

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

This week, let’s do a little math. We start by totaling the amount of time we spend each week making ourselves presentable to the world. Bathing, clothing selection, shaving or make up, hair preparation, all go into the total. If we do some type of exercise program in order to stay fit, then add those hours as well. What is the approximate number of hours each week that you spend trying to look your best?

Now, let’s total the number of hours we spend trying to look our best spiritually. Time in church, worshipping and listening to God’s Word taught and preached, is the beginning point. Add to that, your personal devotional time. Add any time outside of church listening to teaching [TV, radio, CD, etc.]. Finish by adding the time you spend allowing the Lord to renew your mind, build your faith, and make you more like Jesus.

How do the two numbers compare? Where do you spend the most time? Is it on your physical appearance or your spiritual appearance? Does it even matter?

In 1 Samuel 16 we read that the Lord told the Prophet Samuel to go to Jesse’s house and to anoint one of his sons as the new King of Israel. When Eliab came, Samuel thought, “Surely this is the one”. Listen to the Lord’s reply, [16:7] “Look not on his countenance, nor on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the Lord seeth not as man seeth; man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.”. You will remember that Samuel eventually anointed David, “A man after God’s own heart”. [Acts 13:22]

We can have movie star good looks, or the athletic abilities of an Olympic champion. That does not impress the Lord. He looks at our heart.Do we love Him? Are we loving, kind, caring, forgiving, patient, Christlike toward others?

Let’s all try to look our best physically. The people we encounter will appreciate our efforts!! However, may the main focus of our lives be to have a loving heart like Jesus. That will truly please our Lord.

SPECIAL NOTE

We try to remember the battle against abortion and to lift up our local Pregnancy Resource Center in our prayers throughout the year. During February we bless the Pregnancy Resource Center with our finances.  Ask the Lord for the amount you should give. You may give that love gift any of the remaining Sundays in February. Simply put PRC or Pregnancy Resource Center on your envelope. Thank you for being a blessing.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

One of the realities of rural Stanly County is the cluster of grain storage bins that are seen at many farms. I can imagine that the larger bins hold hundreds of bushels of grain. Can we use our imaginations for a moment? Suppose a farmer has a huge bin, with hundreds and hundreds of bushels of wheat. A tiny ant crawls up to that bin and asks, “Mr. Farmer, can you help me?’ The farmer gives that ant one grain of wheat. That does not sound like much. However, in reality, one grain is all that the little ant can drag back to its nest. Is the farmer impoverished, poorer, or more needy because he granted the ant’s wish and gave away that grain of wheat? NO! The farmer has so much that he will never miss that grain of wheat.

In our humanness, we sometimes forget the vast resources of our Father God. He has unlimited, beyond our understanding, resources. No matter how much He gives us, He always has more. I heard a minister say that when he first began to preach, he always imagined himself in the prayer line behind Billy Graham and Oral Roberts. He knew they needed so much money, anointing, and other things for their great crusades that he would get discouraged. The devil added to that discouragement by telling him that God would be bankrupt by the time he got to the head of the line. Now, that minister laughs and says that he discovered that no matter how much the Lord gave to others, there was still plenty for him.

What is our problem?

Sometimes we are shy about asking.

Sometimes we feel unworthy to ask.

Sometimes we fear of asking for too much.

Sometimes we think that if we get what we need, others may not get what they need.

Hebrews 4:16 tells us, “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.” As God’s dear children, and joint heirs with Jesus, we are invited to ask, believe, and receive. Do not fret it!. You are not going to bankrupt God! When He gives you all you can handle, He still has more.

Today, I invite you to kneel at the door of your Heavenly Father’s storage bin and to ask Him to graciously grant what you need.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

The church where I was Pastor in the mountains had an unusual Senior Ladies Sunday School Class. The Teacher was a precious lady in her mid-eighties. Four ladies in the class were over ninety years old. All had good minds and good health. All attended almost every Sunday. The wit, wisdom, and love in that class was a joy.

Eventually, one of those ladies had a fall and the surgery that followed. As a result, she recuperated at home for several months until she could return to church. No one else in her family attended our church. Therefore, each time I visited her, she handed me her latest batch of tithing envelopes. She faithfully filled them out each week and had them ready when I visited.I was most happy to help her. I never looked to see any amounts. That was her concern. She loved her Lord and she loved her church.

Over the years, I have observed others who had weeks, or seasons, when they could not faithfully attend. Yet, like Mrs. Clara, they loved Jesus and they loved their church. Their tithes always came. These are the people who provide a strong foundation for a church. As a Pastor, I am thankful for those who love Jesus and His Church. Better yet, these are the ones who delight the Lord.

The thoughts above took me back almost seventy years. I was a kid. I walked, or rode my bike, three miles every day delivering the Salisbury Evening Post. For all that effort, I made the magnificent sum of $ 2:00 per week!!!! Even as a kid it was a joy and a thrill to put my 20 cents in an envelope and give it each week.I loved Jesus and I loved West Albemarle Baptist Church.

All these years later, 20 cents seems like a pitiful sum. But, think of those prices of so long ago.  20 cents would have bought me a soft drink, a pack of cheese crackers, a Moon Pie, and a candy bar. In my mind, these things did not matter compared to my love for Jesus.

What is your tithing , giving testimony? How has the Lord directed you? How has He blessed you? I thank the Lord for all the faithful givers at Barbee’s Grove.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

One day last week, I heard Heidi rattling one of her bowls. I looked and she had placed her food bowl squarely in the middle of the Kitchen. She wanted us to know that she was hungry. Later in the week, Pamela and I were in the Living Room listening to a Bible Teaching. Here came Heidi with her empty water bowl. She put it down in front of us. Only a few months old, yet she already knows who is the source of her food and water. I immediately gave her a full bowl of fresh water.

Those events took my mind back many years. Every afternoon Dad drove to the farm to feed his cows. Other vehicles could go down the long dirt drive to the farm and the cows would only  look up. But, when that old International truck drove by, the cows immediately headed to the barn. They knew food was on the way.

People often comment about “Dumb Animals”. But sometimes, animals are smarter than some humans. Consider the sad commentary the Lord makes through the Prophet Isaiah [1:2-4].

“…for the Lord hath spoken, I have nourished and brought up children, and they have rebelled against Me. The ox knoweth his owner and the donkey his master’s crib: but Israel doth not know, my people doth not consider…”.

Is that not a terrible indictment against a people? They ignore the God who is the Source of their blessing. Today, it concerns me that I hear so little of the Lord in our national life. Even many church people don’t give him much recognition. I hear about bank accounts, talents, politicians, the government, the medical profession, the news experts, the American way of life, but who is remembering the Lord? It is He that gave us this great nation. It is He who has blessed us, sustained us, and carried us through previous difficult times. He is the only One who will enable us to survive!!

Sometimes, I wonder if the Lord looks down from Heaven and says, “Ed, your dog is smarter than you are”. I hope not!

Folks, we need to focus our thoughts, prayers, worship, attention, and allegiance upon the only One who is the Source of our blessings.  Amen

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

Remember the Newsletter last week? I talked about some of the “snags” in modern communication. I had no idea when I wrote, that I was prophesying my immediate future. Let me explain. I was feeling poorly, and decided that to be on the safe side, I would get tested for Covid. As soon as I hit “Send” for that article, I started looking for a testing site. The rapid test sites were overwhelmed. I chose a drive through site that promised results in 24-48 hours.

Four days later, I was still waiting for results. I called. A nice lady said she would check. Got this text, “Unfortunately there are no results for this patient. Reschedule.” Frustration!!! Then I got a voice mail that said after four days the test sample would be contaminated. Eight hours later they claimed to have my sample and that I was positive. Was it a pure sample or a contaminated sample? Only the Lord knows the answer.

Aren’t you glad that the Lord never misplaces your file, or loses a prayer request? He never forgets what you tell Him. Be confident. When you pray, you have the Lord’s undivided attention. He hears and He answers prayer!!

THANK YOU   THANK YOU   THANK YOU

  1. Thank you Leonard Harvell and Kenny and Rita Linker for handling the services on Wednesday and Sunday. I know you honored the Lord and did a great job.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

One of the frustrations of modern life is scheduling. Does any of this sound familiar? You have a medical issue. When you call your doctor you are told that it will be weeks until you can see him. Or, you go to the Emergency Room and wait hours to be seen. Perhaps you have an important call to make. You get a busy signal. Maybe you hear, “The party you are trying to reach is not available. Please leave a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible”. Worst of all is this, “Calls are answered in the order received. Please stay on the line”. For three hours you listen to terrible music, hearing “Your call is important to us. Please stay on the line”. After three hours, the line goes dead, and you need to start over.I am still developing patience, so those type of events do not make me a Happy Camper.

How different was the life of Jesus. He was a busy man. He spent hours in prayer speaking to His Father in Heaven. He walked from town-to-town, teaching, preaching, and healing. Yet Jesus never told anyone, “I don’t have time for you”. Remember the four guys who tore a hole in a roof and let a sick friend down in front of Jesus. Did Jesus say, “Pull him up boys, you are disrupting my sermon.I will deal with him when I finish preaching?. NO! Jesus met this man’s need for forgiveness and healing quickly. Remember Jairus, “My daughter is near death. Please come.” Did Jesus say, “You will have to check with Andrew. He keeps my appointment schedule. He will let you know when I am available”?. NO! Jesus immediately headed to Jairus’ house.

Child of God, aren’t you glad that God always has time for you? As soon as you go to the Heavenly Father through the Name of Jesus, there is immediate contact. You never get a busy signal, are never put on hold, or encounter an anger screening the Lord’s call. Your prayers are a priority with the Lord. Go to Him with your joys and your sorrows. Ask Him for the things you need. Allow Him to answer your questions. Jesus always had time for people while on earth. That access is still available today. Use it often.

GREETINGS FROM BARBEE’S GROVE BAPTIST CHURCH

I was still eating meat when I went on mission trips to Brazil. The last night of my first trip, a large group from the Brazilian Church took us to a fancy restaurant. Ronnie Vaughn [Pastor of Centerview] and I were the only two in the group that really spoke English. The only thing we understood was that we paid one price, and then we could eat all we wanted. The waiters brought platters of vegetables and some small link sausages. We began to eat. Then, they brought larger sausages. Other meat, maybe chicken, came next. At last, they brought some expensive cuts of beef. I had a problem. Since I did not know the the menu, I was full of the “cheap stuff” and had very little room for the “good stuff”.

Pamela was with me on the second mission trip. Once again they took us to that restaurant. This time I was ready. I explained the procedure to Pamela. I told her to take a bite or two of the “cheap stuff”, just to see how it tasted. But, I told her to save plenty of room for the “good stuff”. I did the same. This time when they brought the best cuts of beef I was ready with a mostly empty stomach.

Life is like that. Each one of us has the same number of hours in a day, days in a week, and weeks in a year. How we fill those hours and days is our choice. Life can offer some bad, evil, harmful choices. Surely, all of us are wise enough to avoid those. Life can also offer many choices that are not really “bad,” but are not the “best”.

So often we are busy all week. At the end of the week, we realize that we had no room left for the “good stuff”.By the way, what is the “good stuff” spiritually? It begins with taking ample time to spend with the Lord—reading His Word, praying and worshiping with other Believers. It also involves taking quality time loving our families and caring for our friends. Meanwhile, every day and in every way possible, we share God’s love with all those we encounter. That is the “good stuff” . It is the worthwhile priority.

As I write this , 2022 begins in a few days. I know I will be busy. Many choices will come my way. I am challenging myself, that in my busyness, I will not forget to save room for the “good stuff”. Would you be willing to challenge yourself to do the same?
